Wood Elf Project Fall/Winter 2014

Posted in Armies with tags , , , , on November 7, 2014 by doublek666

Taking a break from my two main projects: 1)Battle Of Optera 2)Sisters of Battle Both 40K related, and I have playable armies for that game. Over the last decade or so I have been collecting a lot of models and projects. I also have acquired a decent collection of rules sets.  There have been many years of amazing miniatures released from a variety of sources. I have a project that I have been wanting to do for many years, and was waiting until I really had a clear idea of how I wanted to do it. I purchased an army box for the WOOD ELVES back in WARHAMMER ‘s 7th Edition. The intent was to have an army that my I could maybe interest my wife in an be a part of my hobby. That idea never went away, I just had a lot of other ideas. I haven’t completed any big projects in a while. I have acquired some additional Elf models and can incorporate some of them in to some war bands and armies. I have 2 armies (HIGH ELVES, ORCS and GOBLINS) for WARHAMMER already. I will base the WOOD ELVES in such a way as to be able to field war bands, armies and factions for several different games. This project is mainly inspired by the game WARLORD:SAVAGE NORTH. One of the factions is the TEMBRITHIL WOOD ELVES. I had decided to paint my REALM OF BATTLE BOARD a snow theme. I have 1 square done, I thought I’d put together a couple of demo armies and start learning the rules. The game requires 25mm bases for standard troops. And has some other basing standards. I decided I would look at some of my other rule sets to see how I could best build and base the models for use in a variety of games. The games I have considered: WARLORD:SAVAGE NORTH ARMIES OF ARCANA CHIPCO FANTASY RULES FANTASY WARRIORS DWARF WARS KINGS OF WAR Kings of War most likely has this army on 20mm bases, as does WARHAMMER. So technically those two are out. And Chipco’s uses element style basing with multiple figures, similar to HORDES OF THE THINGS, so maybe those games can share models/bases, I have the HOTT bases for two 25mm armies. I have written lists for WARLORD and ARCANA systems. I’ll look at the FANTASY WARRIORS and DWARF WARS rules again. I’m certain that they had 25mm basing standards. I’ll look at the lists. Keeping those 4 rule sets in mind, I’ll construct the basis of the wood elves army. Based on the most common units I’ll utilize the bulk of my WOOD ELF COLLECTION. I can then add more specialized units that might require different basing, or aren’t common to every ARMY LIST. I will also collect some terrain that would suit scenarios set on a snow table. I have some WHITE DWARF issues with the paint schemes I’ll be drawing inspiration from. I have ordered some special bases for this project. I have most of what I need for the majority of the units I have, and may need to locate a few different sizes for some units down the road. I have a small project to kick off the bigger army project. No need to go all out just yet. The small war band will be a good chance to try out the paint scheme, and develop a quicker painting plan for the whole army. I have some painting DVD’s exploring some different techniques I’d like to try out, so this small project will be a good chance to that. I haven’t decided on an opposing force for my TEMBRITHIL war band. KARGIR (BLACK ORCS, KNOLLS AND OGRES), KRAGMAR DWARVES, ICINGSTEAD (GIANTS and TROLLS) are possibilities. WARLORD: SAVAGE NORTH has a very unique army, and I really think it would be fun to collect. The BLOODSTONE GNOMES. They are the most original race I’ve seen in a FANTASY MINATURES game. They have an unusual paint scheme and back ground. At some point I’d might try and collect a force of them for some games. For now I want to utilize the models I have for a variety of games. The gnomes would only really work for the one game. I’d probably make sure I really like the game first. It would be cool to be able to participate in some tournaments like at REAPER-CON some day! So I might make that army some day. But I have plenty of other armies to work on for now!

Battle of Optera Part 9

Posted in Armies, Battle Reports, Prcolamations of the Tyrant with tags , , , , on April 1, 2014 by doublek666

20140331_202024I’m currently on vacation, and getting ready for the EMERALD CITY COMIC CON, here in Seattle. My wife and I have a WORLDMARK RESORT called the Camlin, two blocks from the WASHINGTON STATE CONVENTION CENTER(where the main Show is held). I worked at the CONVENTION for 8 years, so I know my way around. And parking will be tough, unless you’re there early. And it is expensive.  Nanette and I have a room booked for the week, so we’ll be back and forth a little, before the show starts on Friday. I played a game of WARHAMMER 40K last week, and squeezed out a win with my SPACE WOLVES, against Toms’ CHAOS SPACE MARINES. We played a standard Extermination battle with standard deployment. As we’d hardly get a chance to play, it was fine just doing a real simple points match. The list I wrote beforehand, lent itself better to that kind of battle, anyway. I forgot to take pictures, or take any notes. I had a mobile Mechwolves list, with a Wolf lord and some Wolf guard Terminators in a Landraider Crusader. Two Razorbacks (one with TL Las), a TL Las Predator with Las Sponsons, for a Longfangs squad, and some Power Armor Wolf guard (two with Lightening Claws) two Runepriests, and three Greyhunter squads in Rhinos. Tom had a Demon Prince, some other badass warlord, a bunch of Obliterators, some troops in Rhinos, some Dreads, a Sorcerer, and Some Raptors. We fought it down to the last few men, but I won on points by one, the hero of my Strike force was the Landraider Crusader who withstood withering fire, but mad it intact to the end of the game, my Longfangs performed admirably as well.

I am very near to finishing my MINOTAURS Sternguard squad. Sorting through the bits took some time, and deciding on the look and weapon load out took some thought. Since the scenarios are Infantry Vs. Infantry, I figured the Heavy Bolters would be a fun choice on my squad. The Sgt. is armed with a Power Axe, and Plasma pistol. These squads aren’t intended for current meta, pick-up/tournament competition, but easy to use, Strike Forces, for this specific mini-campaign. That saves a lot of head ache when building the squads, relieves any pressure of having a ‘good’ list to play with. I think just playing these games, switching armies, etc. will be fun, as there is less emotional attachment for the players with provided forces, set in a specific situation, and the focus can be on playing, not list building. These armies will be easy to add to, and I have ideas and models on hand. I probably wont work on this squad again until next week, so I’ll just post this W.I.P. shot for now!

BADAB WAR CAMPAIGN Hobby Blog Part 2

Posted in Armies on January 23, 2014 by doublek666

20140122_151248 20140122_151224     I’ve been wanting to collect some more BADAB WAR armies for a few years now, and have had lists written over the years. But spending the money on redundant toys has kept it as just a creative idea. Keeping up with the constantly changing game seemed daunting. I’m busy. I’m a slow painter at times. I finally decided to make the investment, and put together a plan for how I want to play 40K now. For my HOUSE 40K BADAB WAR CAMPAIGNS, I’ll be using all of the rules published around the 5th Edition 40K, including the 4th Edition expansions and Codex, we would’ve used during that era. I’ll collect some of the armies, and have the whole thing ready to play for my friends to come over and jump into the games!

Initially I thought I’d collect a LAMENTERS detachment. As more and more great models and kits have come out over the years, I’m glad I waited! I really want a mech build. Rhinos, Razorbacks. A Jump Pack heavy army would make more sense, as I’ve got mech armies already. More and more I was determined that the army would be my new main army to play with, and such. As 40K 6th EDITION came, it just didn’t seem feasible to collect another big SPACE MARINE army, when I’ve got several mech based armies already painted, or that could use a few more models finished. The prices have been out of hand for years, and I had many projects that I could work on. I have collected some other games and models in the meantime. But every so often, I think about BADAB again, and wish my STAR PHANTOMS had a foe to battle. I reread the ZONE MORTALIS rules, and then pulled out my IMPERIAL ARMOUR BADAB WAR set (9-10), and did some research. Inspired by my DEADZONE terrain, and the BATTLESYSTEMS terrain I helped fund, I’m excited about doing some smaller battles using the Boarding Action rules. The WAR has years and years worth battles and stories to play out. Ship to ship boarding action and other similar environments for cool, different battles to incorporate into the campaign. Missions between regular CAMAPAIGN BATTLES. That is the vision I have, one day of a collection of several of the armies. Lots of painted terrain, several environments to fight in. Ultimately I don’t want to rely on others, to share the vision. It is an expensive, and time consuming project, with no real rewards, unless you count pursuing fun. These wont be competitive armies, just themed, specially painted SPACE MARINE armies in different colors. I want friends of various experience levels to be able to show up here and just read a little intro and start gaming. I’ll keep the armies very simple, not an abundance of special rules or killer combos. The upgrades will be sparse, and the models equipped to fight each other. But they will be magnetized, and the squads can be filled out as the points level escalates for future scenarios. After some reading, I decided this first project would revolve around ship to ship type conflicts based around the battle in the OPTERA system between the LAMENTERS and the MINOTAURS.

It would be cool to have small detachments of all of the BADAB WAR armies, or have a few and have some other FANATICS participate, who are willing to build and paint era appropriate themed SPACE MARINES armies. In many cases, chapters would be working together as allies, like as in 40K 6th Edition. To get things started I decided to devise a little campaign, collect build, paint and prepare the scenarios. I really enjoy the color plates in the IMPERIAL ARMOUR books, and I’d like to have my collection resemble these concepts. Any SPACE MARINE enthusiast wants a chance to use some of newly released ARMOUR Marks. Mixing, matching, creating themed squads utilizing a multitude of kits, and parts. The armies will consist of Infantry and Walkers. To start, I’ll just do 1000 points of each detachment. I have some space marine kits, not being used. A couple of Land Raiders, some Dreadnaughts. I could flesh out the squads, easily enough. Maybe even up to 2000 points each. Or move on to another project.

I hope to achieve the following things in this Mini-Campaign:

1) Create a simple, successful campaign that will remembered as fun.

2)  Collect, build and paint some fun themed SPACE MARINE DETACHMENTS.

3) Create the foundation of a Campaign that can be expanded upon.

4) Make it easy for some one to pick up and play, learn a few rules as they go and just enjoy rolling some dice and moving some models around.

Several packages arrived today, and here we go! Next I’ll post the lists, what I ordered and what I’ve gotten done so far!

Battle of Optera-Warhammer 40,000 ‘Blood in the void’ BADAB WAR CAMPAIGN Hobby Blog part 1

Posted in Armies on January 18, 2014 by doublek666

20140121_110032I’m happy to announce my new project, a campaign set in the BADAB WAR. I’ve been wanting to collect BADAB WAY armies, for years. I designed my STAR PHANTOMS SPACE MARINES around using some vintage era models, that were coming out around the time I first remember reading about the BADAB WAR, a CHAPTER APPROVED article in a late 80’s WHITE DWARF magazine. The paint scheme came from the BoLS fan-made BADAB WAR campaign, for the STAR PHANTOMS. I started that project around the time of the 5th EDITION 40K SPACE MARINE CODEX. I love how it came out, and I’ve never added the squad markings, or chapter markings. I used the army a few times, and I have an army case for it. I’ve played a few battles with it. This next project, I’ll finally get to start using my IMPERIAL ARMOUR Books 9-10, THE BADAB WAR. These volumes are the last word in official BADAB. I love the new paint schemes, and the infinite possibilities to play out battles using this backdrop. I’ve been wanting to collect a LAMENTERS(BLOOD ANGELS) SPACE MARINE army for a few years now. This chapter plays a significant role in the war, and would be a great way to add a BLOOD ANGELS army to my collection. But due to an abundance of projects, many of which were very similar in style, it seemed redundant to paint up another MECH based SPACE MARINE army. Painting more infantry and Rhino chassis wasn’t what I wanted to do at the time. So I have dabbled in some other projects. Nothing as big as the STAR PHANTOMS, and that one took a couple years to get painted. The original goal, was always to make the LAMENTERS an army for the campaign, and my new 40K army. Built to compete in any situation for game store, home or tournament. But to actually buy what I want to use, is a 600 dollar investment. That is fair enough, I’m willing to invest in my hobby. But the purpose for collecting these armies has shifted. As 6th edition arrived, it would be necessary to re-buy all the rules and CODEX soon. But if I wanted to continue to play at home using 5th edition, I could do what ever I wanted. I’ve been collecting  other games and models. But one of long term goals was to be able to have an ongoing campaign set in the BADAB WAR. There are plenty of ideas to use provided in the IA books, and older campaigns. I have a vision, of cases of painted BADAB armies, ready to fight out themed battles on a variety of locations, like STAR WARS: Clone Wars. I didn’t really have to build the army for BADAB and to compete in 40K. I could build themed armies to be used by me and my guests playing prepared scenarios, based on ‘historic’ battles. Like an uber-nerdy Historical war gamer, researching, uniforms colors, and background for specific battles, I wanted something fun to do with my hobby, and take control of how I played, and collected my armies.

Zone Mortalis is a set of rules, for 40K that represent fighting boarding actions, or on a ship, the surface of a ship, or some enclosed, and treacherous environment. The rules are based on the ‘Blood in the void’ rules from IMPERIAL ARMOUR 9. The terrain will be a combination of some of my SPACE HULK and the DEADZONE pieces, as well as some premade stuff from a Kickstarter, I’ll post about when it comes in. That along with my full 6’x4′ DEADZONE battle mat set-up, have inspired my newest BADAB themed hobby project, BATTLE of OPTERA. The LAMANTERS SPACE MARINES are prominently featured in this mini-campaign, using the ‘Blood in the Void’ boarding action rules, one of the prominent features in the original story. Part of establishing my collection of fully painted BADAB armies, would be collecting smaller detachments, usable for the boarding actions, that could be expanded later for bigger battles depending on what phase of the war I felt like gaming in for a while. Maybe some day, with completed collections, a chronological, mega campaign, or series of battles could follow the time line of the war, but certainly we could play any battle from any time, and focus on that for as long as we wanted, replaying and refighting. This first campaign will feature two forces, the LAMENTERS vs. MINOTAURS. I will collect, build and paint 2, 1000 armies and play through 3 missions using the boarding action rules and missions, themed around the battle, with themed objectives and specially prepared armies. Then my friends could come over and play the ready made battles. In Part 2, I’ll share the ideas behind my lists, what I decided to collect for this project and why!

HORDES OF THE THINGS:Lord of the Rings

Posted in Armies on May 6, 2013 by doublek666

A few years back my friend who happens to make a living with Ebay, dropped a Lord of the Rings Starter Box on my lap for $10, it had a large selection of models, that I added to, enough to build two forces for Hordes of the Things. HotT is a set of rules using elements of models on bases. These can be mini dioramas and represent troops, elites and heroes in you army. Two players choose their forces based on equal points two spend. This rule-set appeals to me for this project, as I’d never intended to jump onto another Games Workshop game, (LotR Strategy Battle Game, and War of the Ring) With the minimal investment I’d made, I’d have two armies to learn the rules,  and dabble in this style of game a little. Ultimately I think learning different rule-sets will give me new ways to look at situations in games in general. I enjoy collecting games and miniatures. I go through phases of interests. I like Fantasy and Sci-Fi, and a little bit of Weird War type stuff. I’m interested in playing in RPG, Skirmish ,mass Combat and Epic/Apocalyptic/Titanic battles. and board-games with painted miniatures. I want to move away from huge armies and paint smaller groups. I will still have some sizable armies, and I’d like armies for some other systems, with different models, basing systems, and scales. These are two very straight forward armies. I have Blades and Shooters on each side, and some Heroes. The Fellowship consists of some Elven archers and swords men, a Wizard and a Hero. The Goblins have a hero, some Goblin Spears, and Archers. I ordered some wooden bases in  the  frontage needed for the scales I’m using for the rule-set. Fellowship versus Goblins. Very Iconic. Hordes of the Things is popular with miniature enthusiasts all over, it will be cool to be able to travel with these armies and play in Vancouver, Canada for example. I was just pulling this project out one weekend. This will be a great project to work on some speed painting with. Another great game to build an army for is HEAVY GEAR BLITZ. I’ve got a big collection of GEARS for a Northern Army. That would be a good game to know if I head up North towards Canada. Most of my future projects will be two armies, or groups of miniatures so friends can play and learn a game and not have to invest money and time into it. And some might just be one army, to meet new people and go play in some new places, a good excuse to take some small trips. So here is a cool project I’ll be pulling out to work on some weekend. I’ll probably start by clipping the slots, cleaning the miniatures, then drilling and pins into the models, priming and painting before attaching to finished bases.20130407_134936 20130407_135002

Forge Fathers Project Log Part 7

Posted in Armies on March 8, 2013 by doublek666

Finally!!!!!!!!! Finished the heavy weapons squad for my Forge Fathers 1000 point Force. I had a rough time completing this squad. I wasn’t thrilled with the way the color scheme was coming together. I wasn’t sure how to finish, I just lost interest in painting for a few weeks. I was spending time organizing and consolidating projects. I sold off some older, armies that weren’t being used. I eliminated some redundancy, made way for some exciting new projects, and made some money. My speed painting, wasn’t really working, I got bogged down and started concerning myself with quality. I finally just banged out the squad, and it came out ok. It should suit the needs of the demo games perfectly. I also decided to come back to this project later, and just start playing some more demo games, and teaching some friends the game of WARPATH. Just some quick introductory games with some painted miniatures. I painted the bases and white helmets for the squad leaders so you can measure from them. The whole project looks more complete, now. And I’m inspired to come back in a week or so and speed paint all the metal bits. Then maybe come back at some point and do some nicer paint on the 2 Heroes. I’ll gradually finish them off, and I’d be inspired to crank them out if I started scheduling some games, and use them. Now that I have at least set a standard, and finished a squad I know I can do them quickly, and what to expect. That is why you always want to paint up a ‘test’ model of a new scheme or type of model when doing an army! Of course I dove right in with the squad and had to agonize

1000 point Forge Fathers Army!

1000 point Forge Fathers Army!

20130307_155118 20130307_155109 over the whole thing! What a waste of time! I going to modify my goals a bit. I’m going to need glasses or some magnification, to achieve the results I want for some of upcoming projects. In the meantime, I’ll finally base my RAVEN ATTACK SQUAD, and prime and maybe do some washes. I’ve got some ARMY PAINTER BONE PRIMER spray to prep my ANGELS OF ABSOLUTION(DARK ANGELS) squad. Then I’ve been using some brown and black inks to create a wash. If I get that far I’ll go ahead and use them in a game next week. I’m always more inspired to paint when I want to use the models in a game! Then I’d like to finish painting just enough models to play the first mission for SPACE HULK 3rd Edition. I’d also paint enough for the first mission in SUPER DUNGEON EXPLORE! I’m pretty good at painting SPACE MARINES, so I’ll alternate that with a variety of other projects, but all centered on playing games. I’ll let inspiration, and time dictate what I complete this month(March), then set a new plan for the 2nd quarter of the year(2013).

20121119_19422920121119_194417I finished this army a couple of weeks ago and forgot to post the pictuers, here it is!
