Battle of Optera Part 9

20140331_202024I’m currently on vacation, and getting ready for the EMERALD CITY COMIC CON, here in Seattle. My wife and I have a WORLDMARK RESORT called the Camlin, two blocks from the WASHINGTON STATE CONVENTION CENTER(where the main Show is held). I worked at the CONVENTION for 8 years, so I know my way around. And parking will be tough, unless you’re there early. And it is expensive.  Nanette and I have a room booked for the week, so we’ll be back and forth a little, before the show starts on Friday. I played a game of WARHAMMER 40K last week, and squeezed out a win with my SPACE WOLVES, against Toms’ CHAOS SPACE MARINES. We played a standard Extermination battle with standard deployment. As we’d hardly get a chance to play, it was fine just doing a real simple points match. The list I wrote beforehand, lent itself better to that kind of battle, anyway. I forgot to take pictures, or take any notes. I had a mobile Mechwolves list, with a Wolf lord and some Wolf guard Terminators in a Landraider Crusader. Two Razorbacks (one with TL Las), a TL Las Predator with Las Sponsons, for a Longfangs squad, and some Power Armor Wolf guard (two with Lightening Claws) two Runepriests, and three Greyhunter squads in Rhinos. Tom had a Demon Prince, some other badass warlord, a bunch of Obliterators, some troops in Rhinos, some Dreads, a Sorcerer, and Some Raptors. We fought it down to the last few men, but I won on points by one, the hero of my Strike force was the Landraider Crusader who withstood withering fire, but mad it intact to the end of the game, my Longfangs performed admirably as well.

I am very near to finishing my MINOTAURS Sternguard squad. Sorting through the bits took some time, and deciding on the look and weapon load out took some thought. Since the scenarios are Infantry Vs. Infantry, I figured the Heavy Bolters would be a fun choice on my squad. The Sgt. is armed with a Power Axe, and Plasma pistol. These squads aren’t intended for current meta, pick-up/tournament competition, but easy to use, Strike Forces, for this specific mini-campaign. That saves a lot of head ache when building the squads, relieves any pressure of having a ‘good’ list to play with. I think just playing these games, switching armies, etc. will be fun, as there is less emotional attachment for the players with provided forces, set in a specific situation, and the focus can be on playing, not list building. These armies will be easy to add to, and I have ideas and models on hand. I probably wont work on this squad again until next week, so I’ll just post this W.I.P. shot for now!

Badab War Lamenters and my 4th Quarter 2013 Goals

Posted in Prcolamations of the Tyrant with tags , , , , , on September 20, 2013 by doublek666

Here it is, 2 months from my last post. But there has been hobby action! Work. Family and Band have required much attention as well as running the household, etc., you know the boring mundane things we all have to deal with. Despite my slow pace, I do complete a high percentage of my main projects. Alas I am a collector at heart, so some projects do get sold off, or take a few years to get to the front of the que. I do often sort through and evaluate, update the plans. But I’ve got at least a dozen great project, that I have on my mind at the moment. That is my SPACE HULK/LAMENTERS PROJECT. Yes it’s been 4 years now, so I guess I should get this one done! I’m focusing first on this overdue project! I have bases to convert for 40K mainly my BADAB CAMPAIGN. I have an AWESOME STAR PHANTOMS SPACE MARINE ARMY, but it is in the colors of the Bell of Lost Souls Fan Campaign, yet very cool. I would like a few armies from  the Forge World Imperial Armour 9-10. A BLOOD ANGELS/LAMENTERS army is one that I’ve wanted to do. My SPACE HULK TERMINTORS and Heroes will be available and convertible, at some point. For now I want to paint them up, the do the Genestealers, and play the game. I have played a little recently, and have friends to do so. I have people interested in a BADAB CAMPAIGN, so that will happen as well, probably using 5th edition.

The second major project is to finish my SISITERS OF BATTLE ARMY. I have decided to get in on 6th Edition, mainly to play the SISTERS army. There is an amazing gaming convention, PAX prime here in Seattle. I want to play in the 40K tournament next year(2014), using the SISTERS. I have just purchased KR multi-case with SISTERS load out for safe secure travelling. I’d like to use this as a fun Tournament army. I’m sure I’d use some other armies, but I’d need to up date Codexes (yes correct spelling). I’d be inclined to throw in allies of course, once I start getting my ass kicked. But It would be courageous to roll with a pure SISTERS army, and have an advantage due to lack of seeing them on table very often. If I was a good player who knows what might happen. I’d like to just become a more well-rounded table-top miniatures gamer. I could probably make 2 armies worth of IMPERIAL GUARD and I’ve got the makings of a SONS OF MEDUSA army for BADAB. I’m still a little reluctant about updating CODEXES to 6th. Later on that I suppose.

Over the last year or so I have funded several KICKSTARTER and an Indiegogo project(s). I have really enjoyed these new ways to collect games and miniatures and has inspired new ideas and goals as a gamer, painter hobbyist and collector. I have a renewed interest in Fantasy gaming, and some cool new Sci-Fi project. There have been some painting aides, and terrain, rules books and tons of miniatures at much lower prices than I’ve paid for many years. Variety, freedom, and convenience of being able to create the kind of gaming hobby I want, not dictated by any company or store, is the greatest lesson of all we’ve learned through a recession, and from being burned. I will maintain a presence in 40K 6th, but I’m not going all in. Just participating is my goal. I want to be able to play at the very least, those tournament games, competently regardless of win or loss. I will do all I can to devise a strategy with what I have available, and that may mean including terrain, maybe even allies, if it seems absolutely essential. I just want to play 40K 6th, and a few other games. I’d like to travel. I’d like to do some roleplaying, or board games. I want do a few conventions next year, at least the one 40K tournament, maybe more.

I have also taken a look at my H.O.T.T. armies-a Fellowship of the Ring and a Goblin army to face-off. That is a project, and I know there are tournaments and people play the game around the world. It is cheap, there is much freedom, in the models used, so it will be cool. I can use the LotR models I got for real cheap. I have the SUPER DUNGEON EXPLORE and DREADBALL games to get into, amongst a few others. There is a cool collection of Northern mechs for a HEAVY GEAR BLITZ army that I could possible travel to play in tournaments and games or drive the Canada. I am working on my painting techniques. And getting some airbrush skills, and have a table and some terrain to paint as well. I have new sturdy board for my REALM OF BATTLE table, and some DEADZONE city fight style battle mat coming soon.

Finally, I have major new hobby project I want to work on all of next year! I have evaluated and sold off several of my painted, and some unfinished projects. One is just getting packed away in the ‘vault’ for the future. Over the course of the year I’ve sold off my sizable ORCS AND GOBLINS and DWARFS armies, and a decent collection of WOOD ELVES. I have newer versions, of these armies, as well as a nice collection of HIGH ELVES. I also have an old UNDEAD army that is getting placed in the storage area of my basement. HIGH ELVES would be my main Fantasy army, for whatever game, but I have a new FANTASY PROJECT, that spans several game systems, and an integrated campaign for a variety of participants over the course of a years worth of regular weekly games. The project is DWARF QUEST!

DWARF QUEST-Inspired by the Hobbit, several funded campaigns, and a growing army of amazing DWARF miniatures!  This project will grow into it’s own BLOG SPACE, or maybe a project log.

That’s20130920_115836 all for now!

The BADAB WAR A Dark Stars Campaign/SISTERS OF BATTLE Progress part 2

Posted in Armies, Prcolamations of the Tyrant with tags , , , , , , , , on May 27, 2012 by doublek666

Exorcists WIPWith 6th Edition WARHAMMER 40K coming in a few weeks, and the emergence or revamping of several  newer Sci-Fi, and alternative miniature game systems and scales, it is a good time to evaluate the direction of my gaming. As I’ve invested a few dollars in WARPATH, I think it is a good, simple alternative. I just wanted to evaluate the game with a few armies. I’m not going to continue to buy new rules/codex/army books every few years. I have plenty of games and resources for years of fun miniature gaming. Getting those games up and playable takes some time, but as I add less and less new products and projects, I do slowly but surely get things finished, like the SISTERS OF BATTLE, I finally made some serious progress on. What I’m getting at here is that I might not immediately get the 6th edition rules, and accessories you’ll need to play the new 40K rules. I’ve mainly been playing at home for the last 3 years anyway, we could just continue with 5th here with the current rules, expansions and codexes for our own fun games. I will focus on getting another BADAB army or two, and find some local players into building a BADAB force or who have an appropriately painted force, or accepted army for themed games, missions and scenarios for an ongoing campaign, opened ended, bouncing from one planet or timeline is convenient. I’d like to combine various elements of the BADAB WAR material that has existed, such as the DARK STARS CAMPAIGN weekend, held in Nottingham England, by Games Workshop in 2005. There is a Rules and Information document, that has some great CAMPAIGN ideas, with espionage, planetary struggles, Battle Fleet Gothic side games, and some interesting planet information, that was expanded by the fan created Bell of Lost souls campaign PDF. Both documents have interesting ideas, including the paint scheme I adopted for my STAR PHANTOMS. Ultimately I was thrilled when Imperial Armor 9-10 came out, and I’d like to add a couple more themed armies, and find some like-minded players, or have them use on of my armies, but gradually there will be some themed interconnected battles, utilising some rules, ideas and even some special battle zones and terrain to fight out small campaigns on various planets. In the 2005 weekend campaign DARK STARS, they allowed, Orks, Dark Eldar, Witch Hunters, Imperial Guard, Space Marines, Chaos Space Marines,Daemonhunters. The armies were 1500 points divided into a legal 1000 point list with 500 point add-on.  What I have in mind is like the STAR WARS CLONE WARS series. Playing out various battles and scenarios in a specific historic time period, in and around the main events of the narrative. Eventually I liked to have several battle field and terrain collections for themed battles. There are several companies making affordable battle mats and very cool terrain. I’m thinking of turning my REALM OF BATTLE board into an ICE WORLD table, and creating, acquiring, buying some hills, mountains, rocks and trees. I’d also like a city zone, and a desert like zone, with appropriate terrain. And my friend is bringing his nicely built and quite functional games table to my game hall for us to use indefinitely. Once I have things going I’m sure I can convince some people to build a small force to participate in the games.

I’ll probably add some scenarios in the BADAB WAR CAMPAIGNS to use my SISTERS OF BATTLE army. I got a good start on the 8 tanks I’m painting for the army. There are 4 rhinos(one completed as a test model), 2 Immolators and 2 Exorcists. First I base coated the white primed models with bleached bone with my airbrush. I then glossed the tanks with some Future Floor Polish, with the airbrush. When completely dried(of course) I started the washes. First I hit it with some thinned brown ink with my airbrush, I basically saturated the models, leaving the base coats darker but still visible. I am now working on inking the metal parts and major recesses with some thinned down black ink. When that stage is done and fully dried, I’ll hit the tanks with some matte varnish before I start building the highlights. The main colors are bleached bone, codex gray, burnished gold, and chain mail. I’m feeling pretty motivated, so hopefully I can finish the washes tomorrow

STAR PHANTOMS 2000 point army shot, and hobby musings of the day

Posted in Prcolamations of the Tyrant with tags , , , , , , , on May 24, 2012 by doublek666

Here are some quick shots of the army in my little display case. Below are my Angels of Retribution painted collection. I’m playing some 40K tomorrow so I’ll take some closer  shots of the STAR PHANTOMS on the table during the battle. With 6th edition of 40K rumoured to be on the way in a month or two, I’m really thinking about how I’ll proceed with the game. On option is to remain frozen in time, using only the Codexes out now, and focus on the CAMPAIGNS and EXPANSIONS I own, that I could spend many years, playing, and building and collecting a few more and finishing a couple of current projects, nothing major, maybe just add the Blood Angels army I’ve wanted for a couple of years that would be my army to go against the STAR PHANTOMS.

Investing in 6th edition is going to cost some money, right!?! At least a hundred bucks. I’m already going to have upgrade my paints, now this, and a price increase to boot. Should I rush to buy the vehicles I need now!? Or will the new rules make the army list I wrote obsolete? Or should I just the build the core I want and adjust in the future if I chose? What elese will be need if anything to play the new version?

On another note, I get a lot of wacky ideas and inspirations. I’m trying to reign this in a little, but I will often aquire pieces for a project years before I ever complete it. And many times I will complete the project, and play with the force I’ve collected and painted. But I’m quickly lured into other directions, and constantly seek inspirations, and ideas. I’m almost halfway through this hobby year, and have started and aquired a few more small projects, but have produced less than I’d hoped so far. It’s not to bad, but I’m hoping to turn it around a little. Finishing the STAR PHANTOMS in February was great, but quite a bit behind schedule. And my progress with painting the SISTERS OF BATTLE army has been slow, and slightly influenced by the WHITE DWARF CODEX update, it seems may have weakened the quality of the list I have collected.

Ultimately, I need to really think before I purchase anything at this time, despite price increases, etc. These models will still be available if I need them in the next year or two. I need to get some terrain done, add or finish units for  the other SPACE MARINE type armies I’ve got, and do some quicker paint jobs on some of my projects, for playing fun. I would like to develop the BADAB WAR theme, here maybe develop the whole game room into a BADAB inspired room. I’ve got the cool posters from the IMPERIAL ARMOR books, and especially 9 and 10. Ultimately it would be amazing to have small detachments of a number of the armies involved with the BADAB WAR. One way would be to just add units from other Chapters into a core Loyalist/Seperatist list, especially in fun APOCALYPSE and PLANETSTRIKE battles. The more I think about it, the more I want to start that LAMENTERS force, arghhhhhhh! But I’ll take it one day at a time like most other addicts! I need to start a Seattle area Campaign group, of people to play BADAB WAR themed games. More on that later!

STAR PHANTOMS 2000 Point Army Completely Painted

Posted in Armies with tags , , on April 1, 2012 by doublek666

STAR PHANTOMSHere are the final models and bits for the first 2000 points of my STAR PHANTOMS Space Marine army. The inspiration originally came from the old WHITE DWARF article by Rick Priestly back in 1988. A few years ago The Bell of Lost souls/Fly Lords created a very cool Campaign PDF For The BADAB WAR. And Just in the last year or so an amazing 2 volumes was published on the war by  (IMPERIAL ARMOUR Volumes 9 and 10). There was also a DARK STARS Campaign weekend. So there are many sources of inspiration for paint schemes units and special rules and characters for campaign and themed play. The armies are basically SPACE MARINES versus SPACE MARINES, but Chaos Space Marines, and of the Loyalist Codexes, the Imperial Guard and any of the Badab War rules could be feasibly used for gaming! After much research and consideration, I went with the Bell of Lost Souls STAR PHANTOMS paint scheme for my army. I started this whole themed SPACE MARINE army way back in 2008 around the time the last CODEX for said army was released. I’d already collected and painted many units of SPACE WOLVES and DARK ANGELS, and wanted to pay tribute to the ROGUE TRADER days of  WARHAMMER 40,000. I eventually collected some older SPACE MARINE models, some vehicles, jump packs, and a new RTB01 box of 30 old school beaky head Space Marines I added 2nd Edition Bolters, I eventually added some newer VINDICATORS, they are too cool, anyway. Maybe in the future I’ll add some of the great new FORGE WORLD models that keep coming out, for a more unique Space Marine units. I’d like to add a LAMENTERS SPACE MARINE army to fight the STAR PHANTOMS in BADAB WAR themed missions, hell there are many cool SPACE MARINE chapters in the war, and a few more small detachments would be great for some fun games in the future. For now I’ll be moving on to painting my SISTERS OF BATTLE, detailing some terrain and buildings, and starting some new projects. I’ll post some whole army shots next time. I’ve had fun using this army in a couple of battles, I won actually. I’ve got some more units I could add to this army, wich is a lot easier when you’ve Star Phantoms Space Marinesgot a playable army to start with!
